Did you know that May 24 is Headwear Day? Numismatic collectors have a lot to celebrate on Tiara Day – or rather, there's a lot to celebrate, thanks to the billions of coins depicting headdresses. As you might have guessed, these bejeweled coins don't necessarily commemorate the headdresses, but the person who wears them. When it comes to people who wear good headdresses, the first thing that comes to mind is no one else, but the late Queen Elizabeth II - the monarch of Great Britain, who ruled her land and many Commonwealth countries from 1952 to 2022.
During the 70 years that Queen Elizabeth II reigned on the throne, her portrait appeared on coins and banknotes from more than 50 countries. She served so long that her portrait was updated several times during her reign to reflect the graceful aging queen. And on so many numismatic portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, she wears a crown.
However, let's not confuse the crown with the headdress. They are different after all. The base shape of the crown is a full circle, while the base of the headdress is semicircular. When it comes to headdresses, Queen Elizabeth II is a collector's collector. She has about 50 headdresses of all shapes and sizes for various occasions.
You can see some of them on coins with her likeness. As noted by the Royal Mint Museum, a second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II first appeared on coins in the mid-1960s and early 1970s, depending on the country, and shows the headdress worn by Her Royal Highness.
With so many countries' coins showing the queen wearing a tiar, you have plenty of royal options to celebrate Crown Day. The question is, which coins will you add to your tiara collection? Coin headdress, that is....
